Pest, predator or in need of protection? The national dingo debate remains a point of controversy, but earlier this week the Victorian government announced an extension of the dingo unprotection order in north east and eastern Victoria.
The order permits lethal control of dingoes on private land and around boundaries of public land until January 1, 2028, with the government investing $2 million into non-lethal dingo management.
While members of the farming community have welcomed the extension, dingo defenders and environmental groups say they are ‘deeply disappointed’ by the decision, renewing calls for dingo protection through integration of science and First Nations cultural knowledge.
