Debates intensify over government’s Help to Buy Scheme

The housing war continues with the Help to Buy Scheme up for its second round of debates in parliament this week.

The Scheme, a promise from the Albanese government at the 2022 federal election – is a form of co-ownership with Housing Australia offering a contribution of up to 40 percent.

The government says the Scheme will bring home ownership back in reach for 40 000 low-income Australians.

To pass, Labor likely needs the Greens’ support. But the Greens said they will not back the Scheme, demanding significant changes to negative gearing and Capital Gains Tax discount.
