Justice advocates have condemned figures showing Indigenous incarceration rates soaring above non-Indigenous people, despite a pledge by police to improve relations with Aboriginal communities.
Figures from the Bureau of Crime Statistics show the number of Indigenous people on remand in jails across New South Wales is up by 47 per cent over five years while it rose by two per cent for non-Indigenous people.
Remand figures for Indigenous youth aged 10 to 17 are up by a quarter while the number for non-Indigenous people plunged by 41 per cent.
