Tens of thousands of people gathered on Invasion Day to attend protest rallies in cities across the nation, amid a rising political and social awareness of the country’s colonial history.
With Australia increasingly uneasy about celebrating its national day, recognition of Indigenous people in the constitution has become a new flashpoint. The government has proposed an Indigenous “voice to parliament” in the constitution later this year, but Indigenous communities say there needs to be a treaty before this voice.
The Wire’s Aryana Mohmood attended the rally in Meanjin, Brisbane and spoke with organisers and protesters about this debate and what the day meant for them.
